Williams Fork Electro Shocking

  • Colorado River Headwaters Chapter of Trout Unlimited Parshall, CO, 80468 United States (map)

Greetings all --

Hope you're enjoying our very weird spring so far. I need to assemble a crew to electrofish two sites on the Williams Fork river on the Kemp-Breeze State Wildlife Area near Parshall on Tuesday, May 12. These are the sites that we monitor in order to assess the performance of the habitat project that we constructed on this reach a few years ago.

This scheduling is dependent upon Williams Fork dam releases being at or near minimum flows -- 15 to 30 CFS. That's not where flows are now because of calls on the river, but we think there's a decent chance that the reservoir may be storing some water by then, which means that releases will be at minimum. We want flows to be low for 2 reasons: 1. safety of the crew, as wading and electrofishing are much more feasible at those flows; and 2. The purpose of this effort is to see what fish occupancy looks like at minimal flows, because improving that was one of the main goals of the habitat project.

Anyway, this will be an all-day excursion, where we'll survey one site before lunch and one site after lunch. Volunteers don't need to make a full-day commitment; if you're only available in the morning or afternoon you can join for just one of the sites. We'll need a crew of approximately 12 folks to accomplish the work. The most important equipment that you'll need are waders and polarized sunglasses.

Please let me know if you'd like to join, thanks! Feel free to email with any questions.

ALSO -- if you're receiving this because you are a member of a group (TU, BRWG, LBD, etc) please forward this email to your respective mailing lists. Thanks!
